RFEL : System Capability - Military Signal Processing Design

RFEL has extensive experience in the design and implementation of high specification digital filtering sections for military receivers (DF, EW, COMMS etc)

Wide-band capability, good dynamic range and low-level signal accuracy are some of the key requirements in these types of design. RFEL has both the systems experience and the detailed implementation skills, to achieve a low cost and fast delivery time using our off the shelf range of high specification IP cores, coupled with system design services as required by the project.

Our advanced modelling tools allow us to optimise fixed-point implementations for minimum silicon and least power consumption - particularly relevant for airborne applications. We understand wider system issues such as analogue to digital conversion, frequency planning, analogue pre-filtering and their overall effect on the digital receiver performance, and are experienced in multiplexing several high-speed inputs through single cores.

A typical example of system design is a DF system with perhaps 4 or 6 channel digital inputs, with each channel running at over 100MS/s. Each channel requires initial filtering and then processing through a real-time FFT, Polyphase DFT or Pipelined Frequency Transform (PFT), followed by conversion to power and possible averaging stages before processing in a DSP. This type of design can be produced in less than 4 weeks by RFEL using our highly flexible off the shelf cores.

A typical system design is shown below showing the type of design issues that the company has experience with.

Solutions can be offered at low cost and at minimum risk to our customers, compared with an internal design team starting from scratch. It also allows the customer’s internal design team to concentrate on the higher-level integration issues.

Typical designs include:

Wide-band real-time high-resolution filter banks for EW Applications
Multi-channel communication receiver front ends
Multi-channel front ends for Direction Finding and Electronic Support Measures (ESM).

RFEL is currently engaged in subsystem designs for a variety of major customer requirements in the US and Europe, and is available for free, no obligation, initial concept discussions.
