Mixed Radix

The Matrix range of cores is built around a set of different length DFT cores. When these different cores are combined, they allow an FFT to be configured to exactly match the number of points required for the application, with the most efficient FPGA utilisation. In one application, this type of core was also coupled with a rate converter core to provide a channeliser bank configured to exactly match the required output spacing and sample rate.

For many applications the standard radix-2 FFT provides an adequate solution; however, there are some specialised applications where a non-power-of-two FFT length is required. RFEL have a range of prime length DFT cores such as 2-point, 3-point and 13-point that may be combined to form a large number of possible FFT sizes.

Mixed Radix

The building blocks are supplied as intellectual property components for system-on-programmable-chip designers. They allow specialised and demanding multi-channel receivers to be designed in a much shorter time scale and with a much-reduced technical risk.

As an example, in a recent channeliser design that required almost 2000 channels to be precisely extracted from a spectrum bandwidth in excess of 40MHz, 2-point, 3-point and 13-point DFTs were integrated into an 1872-point FFT. The design also included complex rate conversion, Doppler correction and channel mapping capability and fitted comfortably within a Xilinx Virtex Pro50 FPGA.

RFEL's Matrix DFT/FFT cores are intended for use in applications where processing speed is critical and optimum use of available silicon is required. The core is available for licence in netlist form as a component ready to be combined with customer's own IP. Alternatively RFEL can provide the core in bit-stream format for a complete chip design.
